Speaking With Abraham.

From The Big Screen At Convocation Hall: I Speak With Abraham.

This is to be the longest post I’ve written on this blog.

Yesterday I had one of the biggest thrills of my life, and the biggest thrill ever, spiritually.

I have been studying the Law Of Attraction since the worldwide phenomenon called The Secret emerged in book and DVD form.  I have always been inclined to the idea of mind over matter (thanks Mum!) so the idea that our thoughts control our experience has been an easy one to grasp.  I realize now that The Secret was great for a lot of reasons: It caused a lot of people on the planet to think about the concept of creating a better experience for themselves through their thoughts.  It caused a lot of asking.  It caused a lot of dialogue.

I began to put the concepts of The Secret into place, visualizing what I wanted, feeling good just at the idea of having what I wanted.  The best example that comes to mind right now as I type is my show on PROUD FM.  I had heard a gay radio station was possibly being created, way back when a radio company was talking with Xtra, the gay and lesbian bi-weekly publication I have been writing for for ten years.  I had even written a letter of support to the CRTC.  A couple of years later, when this station was truly becoming a reality in 2007, I found out who I needed to speak to about being involved, and I put together a comprehensive package of all my work over the last ten years to demonstrate that there was lots of variety I could speak about.  Many people also helped by telling the program director I would be a great asset to the station.

But I also put the ideas of The Secret into practice.  Daily I wrote in my morning journal (I have kept one for years) that I was so happy and grateful for “my show on PROUD FM”.  I did this for six months, before being hired.  I cut a picture from the paper out of someone on the radio, replacing that person’s face with mine.  I spoke of “when” I was on the radio (not “if”) … and I continued to take action from that evolved perspective, and I got the show, and that has since lead me to where I am today, with a popular afternoon show about to go to television this week.

The trouble was that The Secret didn’t work to my satisfaction in all areas, for me.  Did you see the movie?  Remember how the girl just saw an emerald necklace in a window, felt good about it and the next thing you knew it was on her neck?  It’s not like that.  The Secret was like Law of Attraction for beginners.  But it was all I knew, so I kept asking, kept visualizing, kept a vision board, kept on.  Certainly these are all great, positive, extremely powerful steps, but when you know that you’re somehow still tripping up (and you know because you aren’t manifesting EVERYTHING you want), you know there is more.

I first heard of the Law of Attraction as taught by Abraham (not the biblical Abraham or the dead U.S. president!) from my friend, Richard Kikot.  Richard now writes a blog called Revolver on my publication GayGuideToronto.com – focused on his experiences utilizing the Law of Attraction. But when Richard mentioned this ‘Abraham’ to me, oh-so-casually, we were at the time busy with other things, and the words went in one ear and out the other.

Soon after, Adam Perry, who was the first Intern on my show and remains a friend years later, gave me a CD when I was talking to him about The Secret. We both share an interest in the metaphysical, and he told me that this ‘Abraham’ was like The Secret – ‘level 2′.  He told me to listen when I had time to take it all in, and to keep an open mind.  But I was in the middle of breaking up with my partner, I was in a lot of personal pain, and I put the disk aside.  I remember when I moved out of our home, I packed the disk up.

Last fall, my friend Gregg told me about Louise Hay. Louise Hay is the godmother of the metaphysical.  She rose to prominence in the early years of AIDS as she was one person who was helping people living with HIV/AIDS to make their experiences better by controlling their thoughts.  She has written many books, the most popular worldwide sensation being You Can Heal Your Life.  Now in her 80’s (I believe) she has built an empire on joy; her publishing house (Hay House) is the world’s largest publishing company of ’self-help’ books.  I bought the book after Gregg told me about it, and it was like a bridge for me that took me to Law Of Attraction.  I learned by ‘controlling my thoughts’ ie: using affirmations, what The Secret had not taught me.  I learned that I didn’t need to keep ‘trying’ to manifest what I wanted by repeating in journals or in my head that I wanted them.  I learned that if I made my moment-to-moment thinking improve, that my whole life would improve and that the things I wanted would manifest to me as I entered my newly improved life. Simple affirmations like: ‘Everything I touch is a success’, ‘Prosperity awaits me at every turn’, ‘People are helpful’, ‘All is well in my world’, ‘I am safe’, and so on put me into a state of ‘being’ whereby things came more easily.  Inspiration, solutions, rendezvous with the right people at the right time.  I began to notice little things: a cab just when I wanted it, a cheque when I wasn’t expecting it (okay, that’s a bigger thing :) , letting people off the hook more easily, sleeping better.

So that led me to want bigger things.  Hay House also has an internet radio station: HayHouseRadio.com.  I found it last December when I was off for Christmas holidays.  Many of the authors published there have weekly radio shows, and they vary from Cheryl Richardson (widely seen on Oprah), to Dr. Wayne Dyer, to psychic Sylvia Brown, to … Abraham, via Esther and Jerry Hicks.

This is the show that jumped out the most for me, and when I started listening to HayHouseRadio.com I listened to each of the huge variety of authors.

Who is Abraham?  Abraham is a group of evolved beings channeled through Esther Hicks.  In an interview I heard on Oprah Winfrey’s radio show with Esther Hicks, Esther has stated that she doesn’t even like the term channel.  She and her husband have been working with Abraham for over two decades.  It was her husband, Jerry, who has always been curious about the bigger picture in life, and who was reading and talking to people. Esther has said many times that she thought it was all nonsense and that she actually didn’t allow Jerry to talk to her about what he was reading about.

But one day they decided to try meditating together, and Esther discovered right away she would go completely numb, not telling her nose from her toes.  She loved the sensation, so daily they meditated.  She started to receive ideas, thoughts, but as they teach you in meditation, you just ignore the thoughts that come to you.  Months into it, she realized her head was kind of bobbing, and that what was happening is the alphabet was being spelled out by the bobbing of her head.  As she started to pay more attention, Esther began to be able to put herself into a state of relaxation whereby she can speak the blocks of thought she is receiving.  She describes it as being like a radio.  She tunes herself into the vibration of ‘Abraham’ and out come the thoughts and she says we can all do it.

Now I knew what Adam Perry meant by keep an open mind.  But I’ve never had a closed mind to things like this, and so as I realized listening to HayHouseRadio.com that this woman was ‘channeling’ this stream of consciousness, I didn’t have much of a hurdle to jump over.  Especially not since as I listened to what the Abraham show was – broadcasts of the weekly Law of Attraction workshops Jerry and Esther conduct throughout the U.S., I have never heard anything like it before.  Every question I have ever had about life, the meaning of it has been answered.  Every aspect of daily life makes sense.  A typical workshop begins with an explanation of The Big Picture, and then a select few ‘lucky’ people are chosen to sit in the hot seat before ‘Abraham’ and ask their personal question.

Over the last year I have heard every show.  I am lucky to be home when it’s on (Wednesdays at 9 a.m. here in Toronto, but it’s repeated throughout the week).  I have also purchased their books The Law of Attraction, Money And The Law Of Attraction, The Astonishing Power of Emotions, and several of the MP3s that are available.  On their website there is a free download that explains the basics.  As it turns out, I have learned that The Secret is actually based on Esther & Jerry Hicks and the teachings of Abraham.  Secret producer Rhonda Byrne shot hours of footage from seminars they gave as the basis for her product.

There is nothing I have heard anyone ask about life that has not been powerfully, profoundly answered.  Gay rights, war, grief/joy, Wall Street, the world financial crisis, even why dogs let bugs fly in their eyes when they lean out car windows.

And over the last year my life has changed incredibly.  People even comment that nothing seems to bother me.  I have made more money this year than I have since leaving finance to pursue my creative ambitions.  The most common question I have had from people: “How do you manage to do all that you do?” (referring to a daily radio show, a regular column in Xtra, publishing GayGuideToronto.com, my new TV show, and various gigs along the way … all very “busy” things when there are only 24 hours in a day I think is their gist).  And yet the thing is, this year, I have put less ‘action effort’ into my work than ever.  Less ‘working’ more playing.  Things line up for me.  The right people are around me.  Circumstances take place like magic.

Abraham teaches that the Law of Attraction is the universal law upon which everything is based.  Like gravity, it is never turned off.  You are either using the Law consciously, or not, but when you’re not you are probably feeling life can get pretty screwy, so you might as well be deliberate.  There are three steps: 1) Ask.  And life causes you to ask all the time.  Someone is rude to you, you automatically want someone to be nicer.  You are low on cash, you want cash.  You hate your job, you want a job you love.  You see a yacht, you want a yacht.  So it’s fairly easy, the asking and by now you have asked for A LOT, ie: a lot is waiting for you to access.  2) When you ask, it’s 99% done by the Law of Attraction.  It’s how the planet continues to evolve and grow and get better. 3) Is the work.  You have to Allow.  You have to act NOW like the person you will have become when people are nicer to you, when you have cash, when you love your job, when you can get a yacht if you want a yacht.  This is the hard part, because the typical human will instead stay where they are because they repeat the story of how rude that salesperson was to anyone who will listen.  Some of us can actually entertain others with our complaining.  Then we beat the drum of how we don’t have any money, don’t have any money, can’t afford it, don’t have any money, dont’haveanymoneydon’thaveanymoney.  And the proof?  No money.  We go to work dreading our boss, we bitch and moan that it’s not fair that that guy over there has a yacht when we would so enjoy a yacht and why does he have it when I don’t?

The Law of Attraction teaches that we are all vibration.  Abraham is a vibration.  And your emotions are your guide to whether you are vibrating with what you want.  So when you feel hate, anger, fear, resentment, rage, jealousy, envy, any kind of discomfort, it’s like the GPS in your car.  It’s telling you you are pinching yourself off to the degree you feel those bad feelings from Who You Really Are. And Who You Really Are is the person you have caused yourself to become through your asking: the person to whom people are polite, who has all the money they need, who enjoys their boss and their work and rides their yacht on weekends.  That person doesn’t hate, fear, envy – ever.  And when you do feel that, you change your vibration so it’s like trying to listen to The Shaun Proulx Show on PROUD FM only you have your tuner set to one of those other stations with a far lesser show.

Teasing (not really), but you get the point, I think, if you’ve managed to read this far.  You have to feel how your Inner Being feels about things, see things from your broader perspective.  Because that broader perspective is the evolved you, the better boss, the better partner, the better parent, the better lover, the better everything.  And since nothing that we want is for any other reason than we would feel better in having it (think about it) then you can only have what you want if you feel better.

It does mean taking hits.  It means that you have to be willing to let go of being right about things, because being right about things often gets you marching off banging the drum of what the other guy did, what’s wrong with the government, who said what.  It means that you can’t use any of that as your excuse to cut yourself off of Who You Really Are.

The good news is, you came here for the contrasting experiences.  When you experience what you don’t want, you know automatically what you do want, and there you have Step 1 taken care of: Asking.  So all you have to do is keep going.  You can’t experience what you don’t want, know what you do want, but then beat the drum of what you don’t want, cutting yourself off.

I will give you a personal experience here that I haven’t discussed with many (because I’m not beating the drum of it).  During the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, my chase producer Kevin booked the celebrity guest onto my show who would have probably been “my biggest guest” so far since having a show: Drew Barrymore.  Not even via the phone, Drew was coming into the studio on a Saturday and we were going to tape a segment for the radio and for TV.  It was all set, I was excited.

Kevin phoned the day before.  Drew’s PR person bailed.  Too booked, too busy.

I felt the disappointment of that for a mere second – and once upon a time weeks later would still be pissed off, would still be saying it’s not fair, would still be telling Drew Barrymore jokes just to bathe in bitter.  But now I understand something far bigger, and here it is:  I love my show.  I have dreams for my show.  I want my show to be big like Oprah’s show.  (And Oprah doesn’t have guests cancel on her.)  When someone has something they want to talk about (ie: Drew Barrymore, her movie), they beg to be on Oprah.  And so Drew’s PR person cancelling on me immediately caused me to ask for a show in which people really want to be on, a show they would never cancel being on.  Drew’s PR person did me a wonderful favour.  In fact, anyone who causes you grief, even annoys you, is doing you a huge favour, because they cause you to ask for something BIG – automatically.

So now, because I didn’t bitch and groan and moan about Drew’s interview being canceled, I know intrinsically, peacefully, I am closer to the show I want.  When Drew was on the covers of all the major papers while she was here in town, I looked at the photos as I passed newsstands, smiled inside and felt appreciative of what I knew.  And empowered.

Big, right?  And a peaceful way of dealing with something that would have once not even a year ago made me feel like some kind of loser, a small player.

Fast forward to yesterday.  Jerry & Esther make one Canadian stop, in Toronto, every September.

I bought my tickets the day they went on sale in June.  One for me, one for Patrick, one for Rico for a birthday gift.

I always thought that Abraham, through Esther, just picked randomly.  Recently I saw an interview with Esther and Jerry and Esther explained, no, she doesn’t pick randomly.  What she sees looking out into an audience as she ‘channels’ is just light, just energy, and she picks certain lights. She says she has even picked friends before and not known who they were sitting before her.

I got a new Abraham MP3 the other day and in it Abraham explained further to the audience at that workshop that they look for the light, representing people being close to understanding and with a question that will assist all in the room.

There were over 1500 people at Convocation Hall yesterday.  The doors opened at 8:30 a.m., and when I got there at 7:30 a.m. (because it’s general admission and I wanted to sit up close), there was already a line up.  We entered the hall and I got fifth row seats over to the side, a great view of the stage.

RICO

Waiting In Line, Feeling Groovy, Talking To Rico. (Note The Notepad. Straight A's All The Way, Baby!)

Esther and Jerry came in to great applause and a standing ovations, Jerry welcomed us, introduced Esther, who said hello and then very promptly put herself into her vibrational state and out came Abraham to greet us.  As always, Abraham took us through a Big Picture introduction, and then said: “Now. What do you want to talk about?”

In the room of 1500, dozens of hands shot up.  Abraham looked through everyone, and then came looking towards me.

“Stand if you think it’s you.”

A guy two rows in front of me stood up.

“Further back,” said Abraham to the guy in front of me.

I stood.

“You are the one.”

And I knew I was going to be picked.  I have been talking for months about “when” (not “if”) Abraham calls me up (at the end of the day, only about 10 people got to speak directly to Abraham yesterday), and when we were in the Hall awaiting their arrival I felt more excited about being there than I can remember being excited about anything. I knew it.  And that is the Law of Attraction, knowing you will have what you want.

Sitting on stage across from Abraham in Esther’s body, I saw Esther’s physicality.  But – and words won’t do proper justice – it wasn’t Esther.  It was love, it was warm, it was a bath, it was pure, it took me away from 1499 pairs of eyes watching me, it was incredible.  Later I said to my friends: “Did I have a big shit-eating grin on my face?” because I felt like it the whole time.  The workshop is broadcast onto two huge screens like a concert, so although my back was to the audience, they could see my face.   “No,” my friends said.  “You just looked and radiated pure joy.”

ABRAHAM

I Can't Put Into Words What A Powerful Experience The Connection Here Was :)

Patrick says he’s never felt happier about anything as when I was up there, because he knew how much I desired the experience of speaking to Abraham.  And Patrick plays the “too cool for school” card most of the time; saying that to me was big for him.

I asked some questions about my show.  Specifically, I wanted to know what kind of effect I was having on my personal vibration talking about ‘issues’ all the time. Talking about ‘issues’ is another way of beating the drum of what you don’t want.  That’s why I don’t watch the news. Anyway, at PROUD FM, our core audience is the queer community, so we talk a lot about gay marriage, HIV AIDS, equality. But these days I’m wondering: Am I not beating the drum of the fact that many can’t get married, that AIDS still exists, etc., therefore causing the continuation of what we don’t want, especially given that I speak to thousands and thousands about it?

Abraham explained to me that I needed to do my show from my broader perspective.  IE: If I know what I know about well being and happiness  and the Big Picture perspective on these issues – that equality and health, it’s assured – then I can’t leave that place and then try and talk to people.  IE: You can’t get poor enough to help the poor, or sick enough to help the sick.  You can only help the poor or sick if you see the poor from your broader perspective.  And your broader perspective knows that there is no shortage of anything, that ‘lack’ is just a concept, that well-being is what everyone can have, and that if I speak from my broader perspective, I will always find the right words, the inspiration for a powerful segment or guest, the verbiage that gets through to a listener, the ability to talk about AIDS and gay marriage and other issues in a way that uplifts people and brings them to Who They Really Are on all these sorts of subjects.

I then asked about humour (BTW this is such an abbreviated version of the convo I had with Abraham.  I have ordered an MP3 of the workshop and will share).  I use humour – as you know if know my work – in almost everything.  I make fun of celebrities, I make fun of Mark Wigmore, producer and co-host, I make fun of myself, I make fun of my dead father’s alcoholism, fun of so much.  In brief, Abraham explained, “Friend, when you “make fun’, you are doing good work.  When you make others laugh, you are causing them to release the resistance in their lives that allows better into their lives because they’re not bogged down anymore by what’s going on in traffic, what’s going on at work, at home – they are merely laughing, feeling joyful because of what you said, and so humour is a wonderful thing, it’s good work you are doing.”

The end.  The rest of the day was a wonderful unfolding through the other people Abraham spoke to around the topics of money, food supply, relationships, alternative health, fear of dying, poverty, material objects, etc.  You should have heard what they had to say about ‘Swine Flu’ when someone asked Abraham’s thoughts.  I’ll put it this way, they started their reply with: “We don’t think about it.”

Get it? Someone also asked about drug use. Oddly, I was going to ask about drugs, but decided I was satisfied with my experience asking what I had asked, and great, because someone else got up and asked about drugs from a far more ‘desperate’ place than I would have, causing a much more interesting answer than I would have gleaned.

Also oddly, I felt my questions were, selfishly (and in Law Of Attraction, selfish is a huge compliment), deeply unique to my own life, but the number of glowing people who came up to me during the day to shake my hand and tell me how much what I asked helped them was overwhelming.

And so I sit here having typed this out feeling very appreciative.  If you have read this far and want more, I direct you here.

Love, Shaun.

And The Last Word goes to … Abraham! “The basis of life is freedom; the result of life is expansion – and the purpose of life is joy.”
