This Is Mark, A Swellegant Gentleman On His Way To TICOT.
Allow me to share what I know of an event just gone by for an organization called TICOT. The Imperial Court of Toronto is what TICOT stands for. Within the imperial court there is an elected Emperor and Empress, and to get elected there is some mo-fo fierce campaigning that goes on.
This year the race for Empress was between Morgan James and someone named Thelma (no website found). If you listen to PROUD FM’s Breakfast In Bed With Patrick and Deb, you will have heard of them; both came on that show to campaign. Elections were during Thanksgiving weekend, and people flew in from all over North America to see an upset: Thelma beat supposed shoe-in Morgan James. Over on GayGuideToronto.com, comments have been coming in – people are NOT. HAPPY.
The men and women of TICOT take this Imperial Court business all very seriously. Allow me to read from you an appreciation certificate PROUD FM received, verbatim:
His Most Imperial Sovereign Magesty, The Multimedia Inked and Pierce Lycan Emperor, Emperor XXII of Toronto, Hunter James and Her Most Imperial Soverign Majesty, The Diamond Jewelled People’s Empress, Empress XXII of Toronto, Ms. Tiffany Louise-Charles have been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm bearing the date of this 8th day of October in the year of our Lord 2009 to declare that 103.9 PROUD FM shall be awarded this Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding service and dedication to Court, Crown and Community. Your contribution to this Reign is most appreciated. So it is written – so it is done.

Like I said, serious like a heart attack. At this is what I want to say about that. I love it. I don’t understand it beyond what I have already have explained, I get when my friend calls it “the Dungeons & Dragons of drag”, but regardless I LOVE LOVE LOVE that we live in a world and a country and a community where people can play as seriously as they want to as Emperors and Empresses bestowing gilded royal kisses or whatever they do – all while raising money for organizations like local AIDS service organizations. The spirit behind it all is amazing, despite any apparent in-fighting, which, actually only heightens the spirit of it all from my observer status. Beats going home and watching a re-run of Friends, I’m sure.
Isn’t diversity amazing? You’ll never catch me running for Empress – I’m all Queen here – but what an amazing time space reality it is that something so magic and marvelous lives among us.
