Hey everyone, and happy Friday!  Heading into a Toronto weekend where the weather will be more like mid-April than early-March, there’s lots to love:

Me. Want. Cherry.

I’m having a delicious week, so thought in honour of it I would post this pic I took at a bakery I was at last weekend.  (God, I just want to stick my face right in there, don’t you?  And the desserts!)

My final column for Xtra! has turned out to be a doozy, and I’m appreciating the amazing feedback over on Xtra.ca and on Facebook and Twitter.  The column is my insights after Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – Where Is Winter Disappearing To?
Feb 3rd, 2010 by Shaun Proulx

"Hihowareyou? How has your winter been?"

Happy Groundhog Day, everybody!  According to our furry sources, we’ve got another six weeks of winter ahead.  Hey, as an aside, does Groundhog Day EVER reveal any other forecast?  I don’t recall so, but I digress. Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – The Meaning Of Matthew Shepard + Adam Lambert
Jan 27th, 2010 by Shaun Proulx

meaning-of-matthew.s600x600

Today on the show in honour of Matthew Shepard’s mother Judy joining us in less than an hour, we are asking you where it is you see homophobia the most.  In case you don’t know, Matthew was brutally murdered in Laramie, Wyoming just over ten years ago at age 21, a homophobic act that is still as appalling to me today as it was the first time I heard about it. When John Announced He Was Generous, I Decided To, Too! So You Should For Sure!

Hey everyone! I’m a Hollywood celebrity and I make millions, and I just want you to know what I’ve done. You know what I’ve done? You won’t believe what I’ve done! I’ve donated to the Haiti earthquake. Well, not the Haiti “earthquake”, as my publicist pointed out the fifth time I said that in an interview, but to the victims of the earthquake. The 4:20 – Tyra, Bloody Tyra
Jan 20th, 2010 by Shaun Proulx

Let’s talk Tyra.

I guess when she started her talk show and said she was the Oprah for the next generation, she meant it.  Following in Oprah’s footsteps, the former model recently announced she, too, is quitting her talk show.

It’s probably a good thing she didn’t last as long as Oprah, if what I witnessed over last month’s holidays is any indication.  Can you imagine the horror on my face when I turned on the boob tube Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – Get Over It
Jan 15th, 2010 by Shaun Proulx

suv

My daily commentary The 4:20 apparently upset a few people listening to yesterday’s show.  One woman phoned the studio and said I needed to be “reigned in”.  Ironic, considering the theme yesterday was political correctness.  So I should be “reigned in” because someone doesn’t like what I think?  Got it.  Several other people said they wished they’d heard it; here’s a transcript: Read the rest of this entry »

Why Give My Story To Them When I Have My Own Platforms?

Wow, what a weekend and what a show this will be today.

Undoubtedly you heard over the last couple of days that I, too, have slept with Tiger Woods.  Life has been a nightmare of paparazzi and seven-figure offers to tell all, but I’ve decided that since I have my own show, I should use it, Oprah be damned.  So today on my show, on today’s  4:20 specifically, I will spill all, just like Tiger did that one session we had together. The 4:20 – The First One
Dec 1st, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

AIDS Memorial, Cawthra Park, Toronto

Picture if you can, me, young and innocent, like, in the truest sense of those words. I hadn’t been living here in Toronto for very long, but I had certainly made my way to one of the gay community’s more popular gay bars. It was called Chaps; these days it’s a Rabba Fine Foods over on Isabella Street.

On one particular sunny Saturday afternoon during these halcyon days I was at Chaps, and I’d brought Amanda, my oldest friend. It was such a first for both of us, being in a gay bar, that we almost felt sneaky, like we were getting away with something.

At the bar we were being served by the cutest bartender – I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. Read the rest of this entry »

So this 4:20 is in no way an endorsement for George Smitherman for Mayor of Toronto – I’m pretty sure there’s some CRTC regulation that prohibits me saying I’d vote for him on-air.

(Wait – I said I’d vote for him – on air!)

No, this 4:20 is just about how inspired I felt when I got Facebooked by a friend inside George’s circle who told me of the plan to announce this morning he was going step down from provincial politics and put forward a bid to run Canada’s largest city. Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – Ladies, I Feel Your Pain.

I Want To Meet The Woman Who Would Want To Be Spoken To Via This Shite.

Inadvertently this weekend I got to see things from a woman’s point of view, as it were.  Friday night I attended a motivational / inspirational seminar (geared towards women, but you know, the message is universal at these things).  Saturday night I watched a Meryl Streep three-movie marathon on the W-Network, formerly known as the Women’s Network. Within both experiences, of course, was a lot of marketing.  Ladies are an attractive market, much as the queer community is as well, for anyone with anything to sell.

I hereby state, ladies, I am stunned and appalled at the way you are spoken to by the people who would like your money. Read the rest of this entry »

Piss, Vinegar, And The Law Of Attraction.
Oct 20th, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

2744690572_6b5cdc58b4

Today’s post will seem abstract to many.  My intention is that it speaks to those who are ready to hear it.

“Adventure and variety from a known place of security and well-being is delicious.  Adventure and variety from inferiority or from a place of unworthiness, or from a place of fear – is torturous.  The answer is not peace.  The answer is connection – to yourself.” - Abraham

Isn’t that interesting?  That quote comes from my studies of the Law of Attraction and the understanding and applying of it was a big, big, big moment of realization last night.

Most of my adventurous life runs smoothly and is joyous.  Life for me is delicious, because the adventure is lived from security and well-being.

A couple of aspects, not so much.  Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday on the show, we received a good news call.  It was from Tony Jenko who is the president and CEO at Downsview Park, where Elephant Man was scheduled to perform over the coming weekend.  Earlier in the day on Breakfast In Bed with Patrick and Deb, Patrick Marano and Deb Pearce had called and left a detailed protest message, live on-air, on Jenko’s voicemail.  When Jenko called in, it was in response to this message and others like it; he had just moments ago cancelled the act. I like to think I celebrate pretty well. The 4:20 – I Love Me Mum.
Sep 25th, 2009 by Shaun Proulx
Untitled-1

Around 1976. Can YOU Spot The Little Gay Boy?

So Mama Proulx’s in town, and we met for lunch. The city of Toronto has always been a big bad one to her, she takes the most offbeat route to get into the city you could ever imagine when she drives, and when we meet it’s at the corner of Church and Wellesley, as this spot she can find.

I’d been calling her cell all morning, to try and meet for lunch earlier.  No answer at any point, and when we met and I mentioned this, she checked her purse to see why her phone hadn’t rung.

“It’s turned on,” she said.

Nice sandwich bag, Mum,” I said to her, as apparently this is where she keeps her mobile phone; she was unwrapping it to check the call display. Patrick was with me – he just stared at worn “protective” sandwich bag wide-eyed and began to laugh. Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – Deodorant, Religious Emails, PVRs + WTF Is Wellesley?

In Case Your Pits Don't Already Smell Like Dark Temptation, There's This.

I’d like to dedicate today’s 4:20 to four things that are causing me a little concern, emphasis on little:

I don’t understand where we are at as a planet on the issue of men’s deodorant, for example. I don’t understand why there can’t just be a men’s deodorant that allows my luscious armpits to smell like … well, me? Why do they have to smell like Mountain Air? I’ve been to the mountains – that don’t smell like mountain air. Or Raging Stream or Fresh Luau or especially the Hi-Karate-Old-Spice extravaganzas also on the shelves. Read the rest of this entry »

Eryn Reid Promo Shot / 2002

Today on the show, alongside Y&R’s Kevin ‘Noah Newman’ Schmidt, and Soaps.com’s Christine Fix, we’re talking with Rita Silvan, the editor-in-chief of Elle Canada. The October issue, their 100th, has a photo shoot inside Coco Chanel’s apartment in Paris.

Le Sigh. I love fashion so much. I know it’s one of the reasons why I was addicted to Dynasty, I know it’s why I loved playing with Barbies, I know it’s why I used to stand in the door of my mother’s clothes closet and ponder the wonder of it all, I know it’s why it thrilled me to have Dean & Dan on the show last week, and Jeanne Beker on the show recently too, after decades of loyal Fashion Television viewing, I know it’s why, at 41, I have spent by now hundreds of thousands on clothes since I started buying my own at age 10. The 4:20 – A Woman … And A Man.
Sep 12th, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

370px-Hermaphrodite_symbol.svg

So just the other week we were talking about Caster Semenya, the gold medal winner at the world track and field championships in Berlin. While all three medalists celebrated after the women’s 800 meter, the muscualr 18-year-old from South Africa, who was competing in her first senior championship, was undergoing sex-determination testing to confirm her eligibility to race as a woman.

Tests now show that the controversial runner is a woman …and a man. She has no womb or ovaries and her testosterone levels are more than three times higher than those of a normal female, according to reports. The tests, ordered by The International Association of Athletics Federations after Semenya’s 800-meter victory determined she’s a hermaphrodite – having both male and female organs.

The 4:20 – Nice Ass!

So I was out for a run this morning, taking myself through Rosedale, playing a game of ‘That’s For Me’ as I ran past the lovely homes and cars that I like, when what did I hear through my earbuds and Madonna singing I Want You, but ‘Nice Ass!’

Now when someone screams ‘Nice Ass!’ I know it’s for me, so I looked to the source, and what did I see but a gaggle of Branksome Hall girls off to their priviliged educations, little green and tartan uniforms being worn like Britney Spears in her ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ video.

The 4:20 – Life And The City.

En Route To Ward's Island, Marinating In The City.

What an amazing weekend this was, and for me it was about being out enjoying our great city. Taking the dogs to the beach and Ella’s first swim, exploring the maze of alleyways in Cabbagetown, coffee and a stroll through Kensington market, and on Saturday, lunch and some beach time on Ward’s Island.

At the end of our time on the island, as we waited for the ferry to come take us back city side, I sat and took in our amazing skyline. I don’t do a lot of looking back, but staring at the city where I’ve spent my entire adult life, my thoughts sort of flowed that way. Read the rest of this entry »

The 4:20 – The Higher The Hair, The Closer To God.
Sep 1st, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

"Why Didn't Someone TELL Me?" - Oprah

Let’s hear it for our hair.

Oprah has often said that for black women, hair is their crown of glory.  She knows what she’s talking about, but I kinda think hair is everyone’s crown of glory, even people who lose their hair and rock the bald are still going for glory.

As a Leo, my mane has always been of paramount importance, even as a little boy I would fasten towels to my head and run around with my long hair flowing behind me.  I always encouraged Mum to buy towels in solid colours, because, after all, what little boy wants to run around with paisley print hair?

The 4:20 – Ella! Ella! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Aug 28th, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

Early Ella: I Would Lay On The Floor And Let Her Come Me And Sit On Me Without Touching Her, Just To Let Her Know She Was Safe With Us.

So one year ago this weekend Patrick said to me: “I think Jack really needs someone to play with.  I took him for a walk and he was enjoying being with the other dogs so much.”

I had felt the same for Jack, the long-haired miniature Daschund, since Sammy, my short-haired mini-D had died at age 16 a couple of Christmases ago.  He’s just a charmer, still behaves like a little pup, and loves other dogs.

And I had been to the Humane Society on a number of times to try and find a new friend for Jack, but it hadn’t ever been pretty – lots of massive, clearly damaged, older dogs – and so had fairly given up.  I could have bought a dog, but really felt that I wanted to adopt, you know, stay on-trend ;)

When Patrick said that though, it brought the idea up of checking the Humane Society again. And wouldn’t you know: There, on their website, was an awful photo of what was described as a 5-month old American Cocker Spaniel, red-headed, female.  She’d been there for five weeks.

Sounded great. I had wanted a girl, and like many mother’s had already a name in mind: Ella.  And this Spaniel was a little puppy, too?

We went to see her, but before we did, were warned.  ’Teddy’, as she was then known, had already been returned by a previous adoptee who couldn’t handle her.  The Humane Society rep said he’d never seen such dominance and aggressiveness in a puppy before, and he worried that if it weren’t broken out of her, she’d really be a problem as an adult.  She bit, she had huge food-dominance issues, she was hard to control, and you couldn’t even touch her without taking a big bite risk.  She reeked of stale dog piss.

Perfect.  We made a donation to the HS and she was ours.

The 4:20 – Dumb Bitch.
Aug 27th, 2009 by Shaun Proulx

I'd Fuck Him.

Meet Lester Felix, the latest victim of Canada’s monstrous criminalization of HIV-positive people. He’s all over the news, photo and all, and he’s been charged with several things, including aggravated assault. To quote one news outlet: “Police believe there may be more victims.”

Let’s reword that to: “Police believe there may be more dumb bitches”, shall we?  It’s far more appropriate. According to the dumb bitch who allegedly picked Felix up online (ie: she didn’t even KNOW him), she took his bareback penis inside her without a condom and without asking his HIV-status.

Poor dumb bitch.  Now apparently she’s called the cops, and here we are.
